Orthognathic Surgery

Do you experience…

  • Difficulty in Chewing, Biting or Swallowing?
  • Speech Problems?
  • Chronic Jaw or TMJ Pain?
  • An Open Bite?
  • Protruding Jaw?
  • Breathing Problems?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may need to consider orthognathic surgery. Derived from the Greek orthos, which means straight, and gnathos, which means jaw, orthognathic surgery refers to a single or double jaw surgery that repositions the jaws. During orthognathic surgery, Dr. Gallagher will correct jaw alignment and occlusion (bite) to create balance with the facial features, resulting in improved oral health and an enhanced facial profile.

An orthognathic treatment plan can take up to two years to complete because of the detailed planning and interdisciplinary work with an orthodontist and general dentist. In the beginning, Dr. Gallagher will develop a thorough explanation of the entire treatment process for you, including every doctor involved in the treatment.

When treatment begins, your general dentist will restore the affected teeth, and Dr. Gallagher will extract useless teeth, as well as any wisdom teeth. Subsequently, your orthodontist will start this phase of treatment, which usually spans 18 to 24 months. After completion of restoration and initial orthodontics, Dr. Gallagher will perform the orthognathic surgery, followed then by the final orthodontic treatment of approximately six months.
