Have you restored your oral health with bone graft treatment? If so, it’s important to do all you can to recover so you can have the best treatment results possible. That way you can finally have the top-notch oral health you deserve.

To help you properly recover following bone graft surgery in Austin, Texas, our Dale M. Gallagher, DDS dental team is happy to provide the following steps:

Step No. 1: Stop the bleeding and reduce swelling by keeping a clean gauze pad over the surgical site. Apply pressure to the pad for about an hour and then discard it. It’s also best to ice the area by cooling it with an ice pack in 30-minute intervals for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Step No. 2: Take medications to help with the pain and possible infections. Your dentist will likely prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to keep you comfortable and healthy. Make sure you closely follow the instructions when taking the medication and don’t stop taking the antibiotic until it is gone.

Step No. 3: Only eat cool, soft foods and drink plenty of liquids the first 24 hours after surgery. When eating, chew away from the graft site. When drinking, avoid using a straw because using a straw can dislodge the clot and encourage bleeding.

Step No. 4: Rest as much as possible. It’s best to rest for the first two or three days. While you rest, avoid strenuous activities because your normal caloric intake is typically reduced and you could be severely dehydrated. Exercise may further weaken you.

If you do these things, you’ll be on your way toward the best oral health possible following bone graft surgery. Then you will be ready for dental implant treatment or any other treatment that can help you restore your smile.
