Having your wisdom teeth removed is often a sound preventative measure against issues with impaction, tooth decay or gum disease. Once the wisdom teeth have been removed, your oral surgeon, Dr. Dale Gallagher, offers a few basic tips to improve your chances of having a speedy and easy recovery.

While you are recovering and your gums are healing, you will need to eat a soft-foods diet. This includes foods like applesauce, mashed potatoes, and yogurt. Proper hydration is also important. Make sure to drink plenty of lukewarm liquids without using a straw. A straw’s suction can harm the incisions or it can pull blood clots loose, leading to dry sockets.

It is natural and expected that the incisions will bleed minimally for a few days after the procedure. When this happens, you can lightly pack the area with sterile gauze. Once the bleeding stops, you should rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm salt water to clean the area of residual blood and soothe any irritation in the gums.
